While riding on the bus and down time between gigs for his band Alabama, Teddy Gentry was planning and researching. He was working on his true passion, creating a breed of cattle that would thrive in the hot and humid summers of Fort Payne, Alabama on the fescue pastures of what was his grandpa's farm.
After many miles of travel and seeing plenty of ranches and cattle, he selected 400-500 each of four different breeds from select breeders. He then chose the top 1%-2% of those cattle. Gentry bred Barzona with Hereford and Senepol with Red Angus together to create the composite offspring called South Poll. By using Bos taurus genetics Gentry hoped to avoid problems with later maturing, poor carcass, and bad attitudes that some of the Bos Indicus cattle are known for. He was striving for cattle with a moderate frame, a gentle disposition, high heat tolerance, and that have tender carcass qualities.
Some unique things about the South Poll Breed Association is that there is no showing cattle in competition. Performance data on a cow should be based on history, for example, how many calves in how many years. There is also no flushing of cows. One of the stated goals of the South Poll breed is to produce more pounds of quality beef per acre off of grass, with the least inputs costs.
South Polls are slick haired red or red and white. They're bred for fertility, longevity, sound udders, docility, easy fleshing on grass, easy calving, heat adapted, and tender meat.
