"Carbon negative" is the reduction of an entity's carbon footprint to less than neutral, so that the entity in question has a net effect of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than adding it. “it is possible that long-term [adaptive multi-paddock grazing] AMP grazing finishing in the Upper Midwest could contribute considerably more to climate change mitigation and adaptation than previously thought.” The above quote about AMP grazing is by Paige Stanley, who earned a Master’s degree in 2017 from MSU and is now a doctoral student at the University of California, Berkeley. She was quoted in an article from 2018 which touted the possible beneficial effects of cattle on the environment. Grazed responsibly, cattle can actually be carbon negative. The key phrase here is "grazed responsibly" which includes AMP grazing. AMP grazing uses high livestock densities for short durations between long periods of pasture rest to catalyze accelerated grass growth. AMP grazing is not scheduled or prescriptive, but adaptive to how the land and life respond following soil health principals. The Pasture Project is one of the best resources that I've seen for practical information on how to implement AMP grazing and beginning soil health practices for grazing on your farm or ranch.
Ask how we've implemented AMP grazing on our ranch.
